I was a bit disapointed by the writers because of some inacuracies in this episode. As a social worker, I have worked with people with anxiety disorders among other issues. Reid had a line stating the term "phobia" isn't even listed as a disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Well, this statement is totally inacurate, as the diagnosis of Specific Phobia is in the most current edition (DSM-IV, pp. 410-417). It is not thought of as an "antiquated term." I usually think the writers do an excellent job, but they really need to get their facts straight if they're going to make such a statement.

You posted this a long time ago but I thought I'd comment anyway. I am a psych student, and I catch little discrepancies in their "diagnoses" of disorders all the time. My friends and I watch CM together, and I drive them crazy because I have a tendency to blurt out "That's not right!" and then launch into a tirade of why that particular unsub couldn't possibly have the disorder they assign him.

I'm trying so hard not to get distracted with those little flubs, but it's hard not to. My girls just sort of roll their eyes at me and tell me "jeez, thanks REID." So I've earned the title of "Dr. Reid" in our little group. Flattering...I think!

Lmao.

It can't always be extremely accurate. But they did win a few awards praising their accuracy anyway, so they're pretty much head-on most of the time. =]

crim minds obviously needs to get a psychologist on their writer's team. i got a b.a. psychology degree from uc berkeley, and we used the term "phobia" all the time.

also, the guy was a "psychologist," not a 'psychiatrist." a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who gives drugs, not a therapist who does talk therapy.

i don't mean to be nit picky about little accuracies (i hate people who do that, personally), but when you have a bit of specialty, and you watch a show that is supposed to be all about a specialty (crim minds is supposed to be all about the psychology, c'mon), you can't help but be appalled!

My only connection to psychology is that I'm nuts (joke!) but I use the term phobia all the time, so I was surprised to hear them say it was antiquated. It didn't bother me (there were other things I disliked about the episode) but I did notice it.

Professionals always have this problem watching shows set where they work though. Lawyers, doctors, etc always notice the mistakes more and are more bothered because they know more. Me, as long as it's fairly believable sounding and they're not saying that something is accomplished through pixie dust and wishing really really hard, I'm cool with it. Ignorance is bliss.

I'm a Psych student in Oz and the ep we just saw really annoyed be as well. I think we are talking about the same ep?. The one where the 'psychiatrist' kills his patients based on their fears?. Drowning, buried alive etc. A Phobia is different to an anxiety and the fact that made a point of saying that you don't use the term 'phobia' is simply wrong!. That aside, isn't it plainly obvious?. has anyone heard of not using phobia?. It's such a simple thing to correct and makes the show seem rather obvious and stupid. Do you find this valuable?
