The Unsubs - Criminal Minds Wiki

"Unsub. That cracks me up, because every once in a while, every couple of episodes we have to break it down again for the audience in case we have any new viewers. [...] It's a big joke now on set."
(Criminal Minds on TV Guide's inFANity, A.J. Cook)

Morgan: A crime of opportunity, or was the unsub laying in wait for this kid specifically?
Deputy Harris: Unsub?
Hotch: Unknown Subject. The killer.
- 1x10 "The Popular Kids"

"Unsub" is an abbreviation of the unknown or unidentified subject of an investigation and in 'Criminal Minds' it is used to describe the serial killer or killers the team tries to track down every episode. The word was possibly inspired by the 1990s TV series "Unsub" which starred David Soul as head of a country wide forensic team.
