Zoe's Reprise

Synopsis:
The team pursues a copycat serial killer who is recreating the techniques used by past famous murderers.

Best Moments Between Characters:
  • The final scene with JJ and Rossi. JJ explained to Rossi that after she'd graduated from the University, she didn't know what she was going to do. She went to the library and sat through one of Rossi's talks after his second novel came out. JJ asked Rossi what he was most proud of and he mentioned a boy's name. It was a case Rossi worked where they found the boy alive. JJ admitted after that she bought Rossi's book and applied to the academy right after.
  • Rossi and Theresa (the bookstore owner?) trade several knowing looks, Rossi is very eager to leave, and later at his hotel, we see that he has her number.
  • JJ, Morgan and Penelope looking at baby pictures.
  • Rossi pays for Zoe's funeral, and is later rebuked for it by Zoe's mother.

Best Lines:

  • Rossi: I told her not to stop until she found the answers she was looking for. I didn't think she would go to a crime scene.
Hotch: Her mom said it's something that she does all the time. She probably would have done it anyway.
Rossi: But it's because of what I said that she was encouraged to go there last night.
Hotch: Dave, what are you doing?
Rossi: She came to me and I dismissed her.
Hotch: Try not to personalize it.
Rossi: I was the last one she talked to before she was murdered. How is this not personal, Aaron?
Hotch: Okay, it's personal. That doesn't change how we go about finding her killer.

  • Rossi (to Reid): Well, a young person's mind is so active. Yours, Zoe's, and I imagine this unsub's too.

The turning point in the investigation:
When they discovered alcohol had been used to clean the forehead on one of the victim's. They got Zoe's body back to the morgue and the medical examiner swabbed her forehead. Through the evidence collected, they were able to match the DNA to the unsub.

Whodunit?
Eric Ryan Olssen - he had gotten out of prison 6 months prior for attempted rape. He began to mimic famous serial killers and a Cleveland serial killer until he found his "calling." Once he did, he began to strangle and in some cases, rape his victims. He began to kiss his victims on the forehead as a sign of caring. Rossi pointed out it was something Eric had experienced as a child when he was ill. His parents or mother would kiss his forehead to see if he had a fever. Rossi told Eric that he had turned it into something perverse with his victims. Eric killed a total of 12 victims. They were able to find the 4 remaining bodies when it was revealed that Eric brought his girlfriend, Linda Jones, to the scene of the crime afterwards to have sex. It was his way of "release" for the crime he'd committed.
