The Instincts

Synopsis:
While investigating the kidnapping of a young boy in Las Vegas, Dr. Reid begins to have dreams that may help reveal some buried memories from his childhood.

Best Moments Between Characters:
  • After Reid wakes up screaming from a nightmare, Morgan consoles him.

  • As Reid spends the night with his mother at the mental hospital, the rest of the team eats together at a Japanese restaurant, talking, laughing, and celebrating.

Best Lines:
  • Reid: "Dr. Norman gave me permission to sleep on the couch in your room tonight, if that's all right with you."
    Diana Reid (to Dr. Norman):
"If anyone tries to keep him in here any longer, I'll scratch your eyes out."

Dr. Norman (to Reid, disturbed): "One night only."
Diana Reid (to Reid): "It helps if they think you're crazy. They don't argue."

  • Rossi: "Not exactly a well-preserved scene."
Prentiss: "It's the Crime Scene Investigators. They all wanna play cop instead of just being scientists and they end up trampling on everything."

The Turning Point in the Investigation:

When the unsub calls the family, Reid ascertains that it is a female. Then, the mother of the missing boy remembers a woman at another child's funeral who was staring at her. The team discovers that the unsub is breastfeeding the children that she kidnaps, and searches for birth records to find the unsub.

    Whodunit?

Claire Bates, a woman who is criminally insane. Bates had a child, but Child Services took it away because they deemed her unfit to care for the child. Bates begins to have delusions that random five-year-old boys are her child and kidnaps them, cares for them, and eventually kills them in the re-enactment of the loss of her baby.

The "official" (if I can say official, but I'm just throwing that out there) thread on this site for discussing "The Instincts" written by Chris Mundy and directed by Rob Spera.

Make sure you tune in for the next episode too, for the conclusion to this episode which is called "Memoriam." That episode is written by Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie, and was directed by Guy Norman Bee.

OMG... last night's episode was HOT! I can't wait for next week's episode to aire. I loved how they played Reid's dreams into the actual situation. I'm sooooooo damn curious about his father, this child found in the basement and if it explains why Reid's mother is where she is. I love the drama... keep it coming!

Best parts of the epi: The Diana Reid scenes. Jane Lynch was spot on and I'm looking forward to seeing her in part two. I loved, during the mental hospital scene, when she told Reid, "Don't say that in here!" when he confessed he was seeing things.
      The Reid-centric-ness of it all.
Some tender JJ moments! She's having a boy!
      THE ENDING.
The creepiness of this episode + another female UnSub! (Added to Clara the college-age firestarter, Sarah the Jack-the-ripper copycat and Amber who killed w/ her husband.

Worst parts: It was so obvious who the UnSub was during the funeral scene (for me, at least).

What did you think? Highs and lows?
