Elephant's Memory

Synopsis:
The BAU is called to a small town in Texas to investigate what appears to be spree killings that involve a teenaged boy and his girlfriend.


Best Moments Between Characters:
  • When Morgan and Reid share their stories of being bullied in high school with each other.
  • When Reid thought Hotch was punishing him for his outbursts. Hotch was using Reid's anger and closeness to the case to help them find out where Owen was or what his next move was.
  • In the end when Hotch confronted Reid and said he should fire him. He told him if anything like it ever happened again, he would. Always knowing without asking, Hotch said it was none of his business but he felt as soon as they landed Reid should catch the end of his movie. (At the beginning Reid had been at an NA meeting to talk about his addiction to drugs and how he'd watched a boy die in front of him. When he finally got the BAU, he lied and said he was late because he'd been at a movie.)

Best Lines:
  • Reid: "I'm sorry I'm late."
    Rossi: "I hope she was worth it."
    Morgan: "I hope it was a 'she'."

  • Guidance Counselor: "Boys have a way of sorting these things out for themselves."
    Reid: (laughs sarcastically) "Yeah, they sure do. Right now, Owen's out there sorting it out with an assault rifle."

  • Morgan: "You know, we forget half of what they teach us in school, but when it comes to the torment and the people who inflicted it we've all got an elephant's memory."

The turning point in the investigation:
They knew who the unsub was when Owen disappeared after his father was killed. When the BAU team showed up at the first crime scene, the realized that the shooting of Deputy Lou Savage was personal as he'd been shot in the face. As another victim, Kyle Borden was discovered, Prentiss and JJ realized upon interviewing Jordan Norris' best friend that Kyle had taken advantage of Jordan when she was a freshmen. They realized everything Owen was doing was out of perceived wrongs.


Whodunit?
Owen Savage. A bright boy with a severe learning disability. He was out to avenge perceived wrongs for both himself and his girlfriend, Jordan Norris.

    Wow! Definitely a Reid-centric episode - no doubt about that. I can honestly say my heart was in my throat and I was on the edge of my seat during the final scenes. The Morgan/Reid scenes were pretty intense and heart-breaking to hear what they both went thru during their high school years. Poor Reid.... he never had a chance being a child genius, having no father and nobody else to turn to. He suffered his humiliation for years.

    You know those little things that get into your head during an episode and reuse to budge? Here's mine:

    I actually ended up seeing Elephant's Memory before 3rd Life (don't ask...) and I remember thinking "Wow, Reid saw a kid get shot, tough break..." So, when I finally saw 3rd Life, I was a little confused about the final scene, in so much as the 'kid', was not a kid. It is mentioned in the episode that Ryan is 28, which would make him around two years older than Reid at the time. It struck me as strange that Reid would frequently refer to him as a kid, when he's quite clearly not.

    Maybe it's just me. I mean, it didn't ruin the episodes I watched or anything, in fact, I loved them. It's just one of those things I noticed and I wonder if anyone else thought the same?
