Scared to Death

Synopsis:

Hotchner and the team track down a serial killer who exploits his role as a psychiatrist to find out his victims' worst fears, and then uses that fear as a means to kill.

Best Moments Between Characters:
  • The final scene when Morgan asked Hotch why he wasn't sleeping and why he was working late. Hotch finally admitted his wife had left him and he wasn't sure she was coming back.
  • When Prentiss and Reid are talking about why Gideon left the letter for him and why he knew he'd be the one to go looking for him and find the letter.

Best Lines:

  • After Reid and Morgan get out of an elevator that is temporarily stuck:
Hotch: "Was that the alarm? Are you guys okay?"
    Reid (still shaking):
    " . . . I'll get back to you on that."

  • Stan Howard (the unsub, to his victims): "Is it worse than you thought?"

  • Stan Howard (the unsub, while standing on the roof): "Most people go into law enforcement because they want to help others . . . I think your greatest fear is that you can't save everyone. It is worse than I thought." (Jumps.)

The Turning Point in the Investigation:
When the team finds their ninth victim in the water, and they realize that the unsub is killing these people by utilizing their greatest fears.

Whodunit?
Dr. Stan Howard, a former psychiatrist whose mother abused him. His mother died the year before and he let his practice lapse, but keeps up appearances for his family. Using fliers put up in public places, he lures individuals to his "new" practice under the pretense of helping them with phobias. Instead, he uses their phobias to kill them.

I was a bit disapointed by the writers because of some inacuracies in this episode. As a social worker, I have worked with people with anxiety disorders among other issues. Reid had a line stating the term "phobia" isn't even listed as a disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Well, this statement is totally inacurate, as the diagnosis of Specific Phobia is in the most current edition (DSM-IV, pp. 410-417). It is not thought of as an "antiquated term." I usually think the writers do an excellent job, but they really need to get their facts straight if they're going to make such a statement.

Did anyone happen to catch the quote at the end of the show from Thomas Jefferson? I only heard the end of it and was hoping that someone else got the rest.
