The Fisher King (2)

Synopsis:
The team continues to decipher the clues given to each of them by a psychopath in order to save his most recent victim. Gideon decides not to focus on the personal aspects of the case. Rather, he tells the team to profile the killer as they would in any other BAU investigation. Reid stays behind to work on a personal connection that could solve the case as one member of the team fights for life.

Best Moments Between Characters:
  • Reid telling Garcia that Schizophrenia is genetically passed.
  • The montage at the end with all of the characters (Hotch cleaning Elle's wall, Gideon in Elle's hospital room, Garcia and Morgan in her computer lab/office, Reid and his mother on the plane).
  • In her subconscious while doctors raced to save her, Elle has a heart-to-heart with her deceased father.

Best Lines:
  • Garcia: "Okay, that's from a poem, "The Parliament of -"
Reid: "--Fowles!" (excited) Yeah, yeah, yeah! Chaucer. My--my mom use to read me that. It is widely considered as the first valentine's poem."
Garcia (slightly amused): "Your mom read you valentine's poems? Hello, therapy."

  • Reid: "It's never night in Las Vegas."
    Garcia: "Excuse me?"

  • Hotch: "What the hell was that?"
    Reid: "He had a bomb."
Morgan: "You didn't think we needed to know that?!"
Reid: "I told you to go downstairs!"
    Morgan: "You didn't say "bomb"!"

  • Reid: "People tell me their secrets all the time. I think it's because they know I don't have anyone to betray them to. Except my mother. I tell her pretty much everything."

The turning point in the investigation:
When Morgan and JJ visit Rebecca's family and learn that she was adopted by them and that her last name is Garner. They have Garcia do a search on her and find out the truth about her biological family. When Garcia does the search, she discovers that Randall Garner, Rebecca's biological father spent time in Bennington Sanitarium while Reid's mother was there. As Reid tells his mother everything, she wrote it in journals and Randall read them.

Whodunit?
Randall Garner, Rebecca's biological father. He believed the BAU Team were all "Modern-Day Knights of the Round Table". He believed his daughter wasn't real. He lost his son and wife in a house fire due to faulty electrical wiring and was badly burned while trying to save his family. He put his daughter, who survived the fire, up for adoption after he'd been in the ICU for several years as he was unable to care for them. He spent time in Bennington Sanitarium with Reid's mother and read her journals, in which she documented everything Reid had told her; which was basically everything about himself, the team and their cases. He believed Reid held the key to healing him, but could not forgive himself for not being able to save his family from the fire.

The Fisher King is such a good team-y episode (part 2, mostly) that I never realized until recently how confusing the case itself is. First, why did Randall Garner kidnap Rebecca? I know he wanted the team to save her, but why kidnap her in the first place? And, he said that Reid's mom convinced him that Rebecca was imaginary. Did he kidnap her before or after he thought she was pretend? If it was after, why kidnap someone he didn't think existed? And, how did he find her? And, if he kidnapped her when he still believed she was real and his daughter, why the heck did he kidnap her and chain her in the basement?

And, most of the unsubs that aren't just your basic psychopaths/sociopaths have some kind of stresser that starts them doing things. Did Randall Garner have a stresser that lead him to kidnapping his daughter? Did they ever say in the episode?
Do you find this valuable?
