A Real Rain

Synopsis:
The BAU travels to New York City to investigate a series of murders that appear to have been committed by a vigilante who is exacting revenge on other criminals who have been released by the justice system.

Best Moments Between Characters:
  • When the team is having dinner at a Chinese restaurant and JJ teaches Reid to use chopsticks.

Best Lines:
  • Reid: "I'm looking forward to seeing New York."
Morgan (surprised): "You've never been to New York?"
Reid: "We've never had an unsub there."
    Morgan: "Reid, it's a 1 hour flight. It's a 3 hour train ride."
Hotch: "Gideon, talk to Reid about taking some vacation time."
    Gideon: "What's vacation time?"

  • (discussing the unsub and how he is perceived by the public)
    Gideon: "He's a hero."
Reid: "The exact same thing happened with the Goetz New York subway shootings in the early eighties."
    Gideon: "You weren't even born."
    Reid: "I read a lot."

  • Hotch: "You're a genius."
Garcia: "You're just saying that 'cause it's true."

  • Reid (providing the profile of the unsub): "He may have a physical problem or he may be small and he probably has a steady job."
NYPD officer: "So, we're looking for a small angry white guy with a day job?"

  • (The team eating in a restaurant)
Elle: "You guys, we're here in New York and even when we're not talking about our case, we end up talking about another profiler. "
Hotch: "You're right. So, Elle? Are you seeing anyone?"

  • Reid (having difficulty with chopsticks): "It's like foraging for food with a pair of number 2 pencils."

  • (watching the police funeral on television as a bagpiper plays "Amazing Grace")
Nora Bennett: "I can never get that sound out of my head. It wakes me up at night. If there was any justice, cop killers would have to hear it for an eternity."

The turning point in the investigation:
After speaking with a witness after the priest is killed, the team realize that the unsub is only killing people who were acquitted of a crime. Hotch has Garcia do a background check and realizes all the victims had been tried but acquitted by a court of law.

Whodunit?
Marvin Doyle, a court reporter. His parents had been killed in an attempted robbery. He was hearing the voices of all the victims of crimes in his head. He became a vigilante by shooting people that weren't held accountable for their crimes, then stabbing them in the ear, breaking off the knife and blindfolding them. The latter was done to tune out the voices in his head.
