Riding the Lightning

Synopsis:
After interviewing a married couple sitting on death row for serial murder, Gideon suspects the woman is actually innocent. But since she's set to be executed in two days, it's a race against time to prove it.

Best Moments Between Characters:
  • In the end when Hotch shows up at Jacob's execution. He has the pleasure of letting him know just before he dies that his son is still alive; he was not dead.
  • When Gideon hugged Sarah Jean in the end and gave in to her wishes to be executed to save her son from knowing who his real parents where and the "legacy" they left behind.
  • The opening and final scene when Gideon attends Riley's Cello performance (Bach's Cello Suites, Suite 1); he had tears streaming down his face in the end, knowing the sacrifice his biological mother made for him.

Best Lines:
  • Hotch: "Are there more bodies?"
Jacob Dawes: "If I told you that, what would I have left for myself?"
Hotch: "You could help these families get closure before you die."
    Jacob Dawes: "Oh. Pass."

  • Warden: "Any last words?"
    Jacob Dawes: "Bring it on."

  • Hotch: (holds up a picture of a grown Riley for Jacob to see before he's executed) "Riley! You lose."

  • (JJ enters the room where Hotch is speaking with Jacob)
    Jacob: Oooh! Who are you?
JJ: My friends call me JJ...
    Jacob: Well...hello JJ!
JJ: You're not my friend: you can call me Jennifer.

The turning point in the investigation:
Gideon finds a picture of teenage Riley hidden in the canvas of one of Sarah Jean's paintings in her cell and realizes the boy is still alive.

Whodunit?
Jacob Dawes. He tortured, sexually abused and killed 14 victims and admitted to 4 more before he was executed. He believed his wife, Sarah Jean, had also killed their young son, Riley.

After finding a picture of a teenage Riley in Sarah Jean's cell, Gideon had Garcia do a trace on the child and discovered that he was still alive and had been adopted. Jacob Dawes went to his death knowing his son was still alive, as Hotch told him just before his execution. Although the team knew that Sarah Jean was innocent, she would not cooperate with the team as she felt he was better off not knowing who his real parents were and the reputation/legacy they left behind. She gave up her life to protect her son.

I think this was intended to be a moving episode for Gideon. Connecting with Sarah Jean and still allowing her to sacrifice her life for her son. And, it was, and it was moving, and you know.

But, it's Hotch's battle with Jacob that makes this episode for me. And the incredible team of Hotch and JJ. JJ puts herself in the lion's den and is completely cool. Sure, she's not in physical danger, but emotionally? Playing into his fetish for blonds? And, Hotch lets her. He trusts her to handle it. And, at the same time he's viciously protective, telling Jacob to sit down when JJ comes in, refusing to go into a bet where he could smell her hair. JJ had to reassure him. Hotch and JJ make a great mini team, and this is the first episode to show it. People also speculated that JJ cheated. Interesting.

And, my favorite fist pumping in triumph moment of the season? Hotch marching to the window right before Jacob is about to be electrocuted, slapping the picture of Riley on the window and saying "Riley! You lose!" Vindictive Hotch is hot. But, right after that, when they pull the switch, they cut back to Hotch and he no longer looks like the guy who defeated the enemy. He just looks terribly sad. Because no matter how satisfying it was to know Jacob didn't get Riley as a victim, there were still all those girls. And, all those girls who's parents wouldn't even get closure because Jacob took that to his grave.
