Plain Sight

Synopsis:
The BAU travels to San Diego to track down a killer who glues his victims' eyes wide open -- and leaves messages from "Death" in their houses. Things get complicated when a new potential victim turns out to have been attacked by a different criminal entirely, and the serial killer begins to devolve rapidly. The team has to catch him before things get out of control.

Best Moments Between Characters:
  • In the beginning when they are all celebrating Reid's 24th birthday in the office.
  • And at the end when Gideon gives him a pair of box seats to a Redskins game; Reid didn't know they were a football team and wants to bring Gideon. Gideon told him no, to bring the only person who loves that team; the only one who calls him "Spence". So Reid got up and invited JJ to go with him.

Best Lines:
  • Garcia: (answering the phone) "Go, from Ms. Penelope Garcia."
JJ: (via phone) "Are you ready with the trap and trace?"
Garcia: "Peaches, this is the Office of Unmitigated Superiority. I am always ready. With the awesome power I have in this room, all I need is 15 seconds on the phone to nail this skeevy perv."
    JJ: "Fifteen seconds?"
    Garcia: "If that."

  • Elle: "What kind of person knows this ballad? Are we looking for a literature
    professor?"
Reid: "Anyone with an internet connection, actually. You should see whatyou get when you type the word death in a search engine."
Morgan: "Reid, no wonder you can't get a date."

  • Gideon (at the 4th crime scene): "You ever feel like there's something obvious right in front of you and you can't see it?"
Morgan: "Yeah, usually right before a woman dumps me."

  • Hotch: (watching Reid blow out his candles) "Isn't it amazing he knows what he knows, and he's only 24?"
Gideon: "Imagine what he'll know by 50."

  • Elle: "You think they'll ever run out of new things to do with their victims?"
Gideon: "Well, finding new ways to hurt each other is what we're good at. "

  • Elle: (hearing a chirping bird and looking up) "Is that an oriole?"
    Gideon: "No. A black-headed grosbeak."
    Elle: "Grosbeak?"
Gideon: (another bird appears) "Grosbeak, too. Female. Huh." (smiling at the two birds) "Orson Welles said all the birds that belong to our sex have prettier feathers, 'cause males have got to try to justify their existence. We spend all our time screaming, Look at me. Look at me.'"

  • Morgan: "Why the Tommy Killer?"
Hotch: "You know the rock opera? Well, this Unsub glues his victims' eyes wide open."
Reid: "He wants them to see him."
    Gideon: "And feel them."

The turning point in the investigation:
Gideon realizes that the killer is spying on the women he kills from the telephone poles in their neighborhood -- that he is a phone technician, which is why no one has ever noticed him.

Whodunit?
Franklin Graney, a phone technician. He lives with his overbearing mother. He would watch the families routine while working on their telephone lines. He would tape the woman's eyes open and have them facing the telephone poles where he worked.
